Keeping the Country’s Cyber Space Safe: Dr. Sanjay Bahl, Director General, Cert-In

Today, the human civilization is digitizing at a rapid pace and leveraging technology for survival and growth. Every part of human activity is touched by this phenomenon. As cyber space continues to expand rapidly, it is increasingly being seen that the same network connectivity has also increased the vulnerabilities of society, businesses, academia, individuals as well as countries. Data breaches or cyberattacks can threaten international peace or the security of global systems. It therefore deserves effective cyber security emergency response to incidents particularly when the attack target are countries.

Dr. Sanjay Bahl is one such warrior doing yeoman service in defending the country’s cyber space. Currently the Director General of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or Cert-In, he has almost three and a half decades of experience in the ICT industry. His background includes skills and knowledge encompassing rich experience in technology, global trade, business, and policy in both the private and public sectors, public policy, academic, and legal areas.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) is primarily the national nodal agency for tackling computer security incidents when they occur. In fact, CERT-In is playing a key role in defending the country’s cyber borders and is an office within the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Government of India. It is mandated to deal with cyber security threats and attacks such as hacking and phishing and other such security-related defence of the Indian cyber space.

Dr. Bahl has varied and diverse international experience as well. As a resource person for the UN-APCICT, Dr Bahl has imparted security and privacy training module of the Academy of ICT Essentials for government leaders. He has served as the European Service Delivery Manager for twelve nations of Europe.

He has held several leadership positions in the private sector as well. He was the Global Chief Security Officer (CSO) for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the CSO for Microsoft Corporation (India) Pvt Ltd. He has been the Chief Information Officer for Hughes (India) Ltd on secondment from TCS. He has developed, executed and managed large complex software and turnkey projects, carried out product evaluations, sales and marketing, development of the Middle East operations for TCS as the Regional Manager.

A senior professional in information security, privacy, IT governance, risk and compliance, he has served on ISACA’s India Task Force, is on the Asian Advisory Board of ISC2 and is an Advisory Board member of Centre for Strategic Cyberspace + Security Science. He is a prominent speaker at several significant industry events and is widely considered as an expert.
